AAFCO

The term AAFCO stands for the Association of American Feed Control Officials. A basic goal of AAFCO is to provide a mechanism for developing and implementing uniform and equitable laws, regulations, standards and enforcement policies for regulating the manufacture, distribution and sale of animal feeds.

Alfalfa Meal

Alfalfa meal is ground dried alfalfa. It is a good source of protein, fiber, calcium, iron and chlorophyll. We use sun cured alfalfa that is certified pesticide free. ApplesApples are an excellent source of pectin, a soluble dietary fiber.Ascorbic Acidsee Vitamin C

B

Barley – Ground

Ground Barley is the whole grain with the hull and bran ground. It is a good carbohydrate source for energy, B vitamins and fiber for colon health. It is an excellent source of soluble fiber and has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. Barley is a quality grain source and minimizes allergic reactions typically associated with wheat.

Barley, Cracked Pearled

Cracked Pearled Barley is produced from the whole seeds that have been scoured to remove the seed hull and bran. It has a unique nutritional make-up, modest amounts of slowly digested starch and the soluble fiber B-glucan.

Basil

Basil contains essential oils.  These oils contain valuable compounds which can benefit your dog just like they can for you.  Research shows basil has strong antiviral, antimicrobial as well as antioxidant properties.

Beet Pulp

Is a great source of fiber. Beet Pulp is derived from sugar beets, that are whitish in color. Beet Pulp used in Pet Pantry formulas contain less than 1% sugar. The amount of sugar from beet pulp in the final formula is 0.0003%, basically zero.

Biotin

Also known as Vitamin H, it is active in the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and protein, and the formation of fatty acids. It promotes normal health of sweat glands, nerve tissue, bone marrow, blood cells, skin and hair. It is essential for growth and well-being.

Blueberries

Blueberries are rich in Vitamin A& C, Potassium, Fiber and various carotenoids which are valuable antioxidants.

Brewers Dried Yeast

This ingredient is a rich source of many nutrients including many B vitamins, phosphorus and chromium. This variety and abundance of nutrients has made Brewers Yeast an enduring supplement. (Michael Johnson, M.D., president of the American College for Advancement in Medicine). It is an excellent supplement for developing children and is sold as a supplement in pet stores and in health food stores. The chromium content helps regulate sugar metabolism. The yeast is not live and “has no relation to yeast overgrowth in pets”. (Nutrition Almanac, 4th Edition)

Brewers Rice

From field through milling about 12-24% of the kernels become broken; this broken rice is called Brewers Rice. While White Rice purchased in the super market for human consumption contains about 4 percent ‘brokens’ or Brewers Rice, the balance is used mostly in pet food. It is a nutritionally sound ingredient.

Brown Rice – Ground

A natural whole grain rice that is associated with natural health foods. The bran portion provides essential B vitamins, minerals and fiber. Brown Rice is an excellent, high quality complex carbohydrate source for energy and fiber for colon health.

Buffalo or Bison Meal

Buffalo or Bison Meal is a lean meat, highly digestible and an excellent source of essential amino acids.  This ingredient would be considered a unique or unusual protein source, so it is a great choice for pets that have some food sensitivities or allergies.

C

Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate is a mineral used to provide calcium. It must contain a minimum of 38% calcium.

Calcium Pantothenate

One of the B vitamins, it acts as a coenzyme in the conversion of amino acids and is important for healthy skin. It also promotes normal growth and development and aids in the release of energy from foods

Canola Oil

Canola oil is obtained by extracting the oil from canola seeds. It cannot contain more than 3% impurities. The oiil provides the animal with the essential fatty acid alpha-linoleic acid necessary for a healhy coat.

Carrageenan Gum

Carrageenan gum is the extract from the red seaweed found in the North Atlantic coastal regions. It is usually used in canned pet foods to help bind water, which in turn improves the overall appearance of the product.

Carrot

Carrots are an excellent source of fiber and minerals. Also a good natural source of beta-carotene, an antioxidant essential for neutralizing free radicals.

Catfish Meal

Our top quality fish meal is made by drying the freshest catfish at a low temperature, creating a concentrated, highly-digestible protein source. In addition to being an excellent source of protein, catfish meal provides natural DHA and EPA, the most important of all the Omega-3 fatty acids. Vital for a strong healthy heart and central nervous system, DHA and EPA can also help promote healthy skin and a shiny coat.

Chelate

Minerals are hard to absorb. If they are attached to an easily absorbable substance, they will get into the bloodstream more readily. The Pet Pantry uses minerals that are chelated or “attached to” easily absorbable amino acids. As a result, Pet Pantry minerals are up to four times more readily absorbed than commonly used inorganic minerals.

Chicken Fat

A quality source of Omega 6 fatty acids. Our fat is pure and clear and originates in USDA plants processing chickens for our dinner table. Fats do not cause allergies as they lack protein. Your pet can be allergic to chicken, but will not be allergic to chicken fat.Chicken MealChicken meal is a highly digestible protein source produced by cooking chicken at high temperatures, extracting the fat and drying the meat residue. It is a meat protein, providing essential amino acids and fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals for muscle development and energy. Chicory Root Extract

The primary compound of chicory root is inulin. Inulin serves as a food source for the healthy microbials that are supplemented in our foods.

Choline Chloride

A source of the nutrient choline. Choline is necessary for a number of important functions including energy metabolism and proper nerve function.

Citric Acid

A weak organic acid found in citrus fruits. It is a natural preservative. It occurs in the metabolism of almost all living things. It also serves as an environmentally benign cleaning agent and acts as an antioxidant

Cobalt

Cobalt helps to promote red blood cell formation, is involved in enzyme reactions and aids in forming myelin nerve coverings.

Copper

Copper promotes normal red blood cell formation, acts as a catalyst in storage and release of iron to form hemoglobin for red blood cells, assists in the production of several enzymes involved in respiration, promotes connective-tissue formation and central nervous system function and promotes normal insulin function. Copper is an essential mineral for preventing anemia in dogs and cats.

Copper Amino Acid Chelate

The chelated form of copper is more readily absorbed by the animal.Copper SulfateA compound which is used as a source of copper.

Corn Gluten Meal

Corn gluten meal is the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm.

Cranberry

Aid in maintaining a healthy urinary tract, urinary pH, and acts as a taste stimulant. They also contain a higher antioxidant level than most other fruits. Cranberry is a good source of Vitamin C and fiber.

Cranberry Powder

Cranberry powder is the dehydrated form of the cranberry plant and is an excellent source of vitamin C. Dried or dehydrated fruits are very nutrient dense.

D

d-Activated Animal Sterol (source of Vitamin D-3)

Vitamin D promotes healthy skin, bone, connective tissue and heart. It is necessary for the proper absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus.

d-Calcium Pantothenate

Essential for the metabolism of fats, fatty acids and the production of hormones,sterols and enzymes. It is helpful in the prevention of diseases of the GI tract and the immune system, particularly diseases of the adrenal gland system. Important in cell building and the central nervous system.

dl-Methionine

Methionine is an essential sulfur amino acid. It is a part of the formation of numerous important compounds in the body. Important for growth, and the synthesis of taurine, cysteine, bile, carnitine and endorphins. Adequate methionine helps hair, skin, foot pads and nails. This amino acid aids in the body’s detoxification processes. Diets deficient in this amino acid may result in a destructive breakdown and metabolism of protein. Methionine is critical in regulating the availability of folic acid.

Dried Egg Product

We use complete whole egg from a farm producing product for human use. Some brands use yolks and whites which are later recombined. The AAFCO definition for this is “Dried Egg Product” and the term is forced on all pet food makers, even though some, like The Pet Pantry, use whole egg.

Duck Meal

Cooked down duck meat creating a concentrated, high digestible protein and fat source. An excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. This ingredient would be considered a unique or unusual protein source, so it is a great choice for pets that have some food sensitivities or allergies.

Eggs

Egg is a source of high quality protein and fatty acids. It is a complete protein source providing all the essential amino acids contributing to growth and muscle development. The fatty acid profile includes arachidonic acid, and Omega-6 fatty acids associated with healthy skin and coat. The eggs used in our recipe are whole and fresh from USDA approved facilities.

Ethylene Diamine Dihydriode

EDDI is an organic source of iodine and is in the food to supply the necessary iodine nutrient level. EDDI is the most available source of iodine

F

Fish Meal

Fish Meal is an exellent source of protein and omega fatty acids that help the skin and coat, growth and evelopment.

Flaxseed

Ground flaxseed meal is the product of whole flax seeds and is found to be rich in Omega 3 fatty acids (improves shine of dog’s coat), high in fiber (which adds bulk to the diet) and help aid in movement of food through digestive system. Also other wide ranging health effects involving cardiovascular, endocrine and immune system benefits. Flaxseed Oils the richest source of the essential Omega 3 fatty acids (linolenic acid). It improves both the immune response and reproductive response. We use a variety of Omega 3 sources, because each brings its own special nutrient benefits to the formula.

Folic Acid

Folic acid is another B-vitamin. Necessary for the metabolism of amino acids and the production of red blood cells, hormones, and antibodies.

Garlic

A potent antioxidant that helps to thin the blood, strengthen the heart and maintain good circulation. It contains a natural antibiotic and antiseptic called allicin. It is also known to help protect against cancer.

H

Herring Meal

Herring, the clean tissue of undecomposed whole herring or herring parts, cooked down creating a concentrated, highly digestible protein and fat source known as herring meal. It is a source of protein and long chain Omega 3 fatty acids which are critical for healthy skin and coat, proper body function and enhanced learning of young puppies.

I

Inositol

Inositol plays an important part in the health of cell membranes especially the specialized cells in the brain, bone marrow, eyes and intestines.

Inulin

Inulin is a natural fiber, referred to in human nutrition as a Prebiotic. Research shows it encourages the growth of favorable bacteria (DFM’s/Direct Fed Microbials) such as Lactobacillus.

Iron

Iron is an essential mineral for preventing anemia, stimulating bone-marrow production of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the red-blood cell pigment that carries oxygen to body cells and forms part of several enzymes and proteins.Iron SulfateA form of added iron. K

Kelp

Kelp is a good source of essential vitamins and minerals (including iodine). It is a good antioxidant and has been known to be beneficial in helping to protect against cancer and maintaining a healthy skin and coat. We use kelp from only cold water oceans.

L

L-Lysine

Lysine is an essential amino acid for cats and dogs. It is also important for kittens that have a propensity to suffer from upper respiratory health issues. Studies have indicated ensuring adequate l-lysine will mitigate this health risk for kittens.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus

form of bacteria that is also known as “good bacteria” because it maintains a healthy digestive tract. By displacing other bacteria and yeast, acidophilus may also play an important role in immune system function and prevention of gastrointestinal problems. Acidophilus and other beneficial bacteria are both acid and bile resistant, and are capable of surviving transit through the GI tract after being ingested. The bacteria are called “probiotics” because regular consumption is linked to several health benefits.

Lamb Meal

Lamb is a highly digestible protein source providing essential amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals for muscle development, energy, and coat condition. Amino acids and fatty acids are more readily available in lamb since it is not subjected to a high heat process. Lamb used in Pet Pantry foods is New Zealand Free-Range, grass fed, lamb and is hormone, antibiotic and steroid free.

Lecithin

Lecithin is rich in choline and necessary for the proper functioning of the skin, liver, brain, and nervous system. Lecithin also helps in the digestion and emulsification of fats.

Lentils

Lentils are rich in B vitamins. Also rich in fiber that promotes a healthy heart and lower cholesterol.

M

Manganese Amino Acid Chelate

Manganese is an essential mineral for normal growth and development, aids in carbohydrate metabolism, promotes nerve functions, aids in formation of connective tissue and is involved in the antioxidation process. The chelate version of manganese is the most bioavailable to your pet.

Manganese Sulfate

A compound which is used as a source of manganese. The manganese from manganese oxide is not very bioavailalble and is a poor source of manganese.

Meal

Meal is a highly digestible protein source produced by cooking lamb, chicken or fish at high temperatures, extracting the fat and drying the meat residue. Compared to other companies that list Lamb, Chicken or Fish, which is about 70% water, meal is a much better way to know where the protein in the food is coming from.

Menadione Dimethylpyrimidinol Sulfate

This compound is a source of Vitamin K activity. Vitamin K also know as Phytonadione and is essential for blood coagulation. It promotes normal growth and development and bone health.

Menhaden Fish Meal

A meal obtained from processing fish of the menhaden species. It is an excellent source of high quality fish protein and Omega 3 essential fatty acids including EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and arachionic acid; fatty acids associated with preventing coronary artery disease and protecting against arteriosclerosis. Omega 3 fatty acids are also associated with improved immune response and are potential anti-inflammatory aids.

Menhaden Fish Oil

Also an excellent Omega 3 source, it improves both the immune response and reproductive response. We use a variety of Omega 3 sources, because each brings its own special nutrient benefits to the formula.

Millet

Ground millet is the entire product obtained in grinding millet. It is a nutritious grain that is high in fiber and B-complex: niacin, thiamin, riboflavin and mehionine.

Milo

Milo is a grain which is used primarily as a source of carbohydrates. It contains more fiber and less fat than most other grains. An additional benefit over other grains is its digestibility. It can help to control blood sugar. It is also referred to as sorghum.

N

Natural Flavors

Natural flavor is a powder or liquid made by taking clean animal tissue (usually liver) and breaking it down using enzymes. Natural flavor is used for its ability to improve the taste of dry foods.

Natural Mixed Tocopherals

This a mixture of differing forms of vitamin E used as a preservative and antioxidant to stabilize fats to prevent them from becoming rancid. An excellent source of Vitamin E. A powerful antioxidant to protect against cell damage from free radicals (cancer causing agents). Helps maintain normal heart and joint function.

Niacin

Vitamin B3 is also called Nicotinic Acid or Nicotinamide. It is essential for healthy nerves and skin. It is important in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats and reduces cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Important for the proper health of the central nervous and GI systems.

Oatmeal

This new star of the health food industry is an excellent source of quality fiber. The veterinary dermatology group recommends using oatmeal on dogs with skin allergies, both as a shampoo and in the diet. Our human grade oatmeal is non-GMO, has not been irradiated, and contains no processing, chemical, nutritional or medicinal additives. Oatmeal’s high content of complex carbohydrates and fiber help stabilize blood glucose levels. It is highly nutritious and free of sodium.

Oligofructose

Olifofructose is a subgroup of inulin, is fructose polymers which plants use to store carbohydrates. A good source of dietary fiber.

Parsley

Fresh parsley is an herb associated with reducing urinary tract inflammation, aids in digestion and increases renal function to help the body dispose of excessive fluid by increasing urine production. It also contains Vitamin A and Vitamin C, vitamins associated with antioxidant properties.

Peas

Peas are an excellent source of fiber.

Pork Meal

Dried ground up pork meat, not to contain more than 10% mositure. Pork has an excellent amino acid profile. A unique source of protein and therefore hypoallergenic.

Potassium Choloride

A potassium supplement. It contains 40% potassium and 60% chloride. It is important in helping the pet maintain proper acid-base balance. Potassium is important for a healthy nervous system and a regular heart rhythm. Aids in proper muscle contraction and maintaining stable blood pressure.

Potato

The Pet Pantry uses whole, fresh, Idaho Potatoes. Potatoes are a real energy provider for your dog as they provide an excellent source of highly digestible complex carbohydrates. They contain an abundance of potassium, iron and magnesium, minerals required for healthy muscles and a strong heart. Potatoes are also a good source of Vitamin C and B vitamins.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics are usually composed of chicory root extract, of which the primary compound is inulin. Inulin serves as a food source for the probiotics, the live micro-organisms that help digestion and food utilization.

Pyridoxine Hydrochloride

Vitamin B6 is essential for the metabolism of proteins. It acts as a cofactor for the large Hydrochloride number of enzymes involved in amino acid and metabolism. It is also involved in the metabolism of the precursor of heme – a compound of blood that helps in the normal function of the brain.

Riboflavin Supplement

Riboflavin is important for the digestion of fats and carbohydrates and for healthy skin and coat. Key for normal growth and development. Riboflavin is a B-complex vitamin.

Rosemary Extract

Rosemary is extracted from the rosemary plant and is used as an anti-oxidant to increase the effectiveness of mixed tocopherols in preserving the food.

Salmon

The Pet Pantry uses freshly caught wild Alaskan Salmon. It is an excellent source of high quality protein, calcium, phosphorous and long chain Omega 3 fatty acids, which are critical for healthy skin, coat and proper body function.

Salmon Meal

Salmon is cooked down, creating a concentrated, highly digestible protein and fat source known as salmon meal. For our cat foods we source and select special low ash salmon meal to control mineral levels that contribute to proper urinary health. It is an excellent source of high quality protein, calcium, phosphorus and long chain Omega 3 fatty acids, which are critical for healthy skin, coat and proper body function as well as promotes brain development of kittens, puppies, and babies.

Salt

A sodium supplement typically found in pet food. It is important in helping the pet maintain proper fluid balance.

Sea Salt

A natural form of salt obtained from processing seawater. It is a supplement for sodium and chloride, essential nutrients required by dogs and cats. Sodium and chloride are electrolytes. They help regulate water balance in the body, aid in muscle contraction and nerve transmission and regulate the body’s acid-balance. Sea salt also contains trace minerals associated with animal health.

Sodium Selenite

A source of the trace mineral selenium. Since animals require only about 0.1 parts per million of selenium, sodium selenite does not contribute any significant amounts of sodium.

Spinach

Spinach is rich in carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lutein, and also contains quercetin, a phytochemical with antioxidant properties. Spinach is also a good source of vitamin K, magnesium and manganese.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes are excellent source of complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and Beta Carotene. The starch in sweet potatoes converts to sugar easily and provides quick energy.

T

Taurine

Taurine is a sulfur-containing essential amino acid found in most cells of the body, adrenal glands, blood, cardiac muscle and the brain. It is an important regulator of various muscle systems and is essential for the proper growth and intestinal absorption of lipids or fats as cholesterol. A deficiency of taurine in cats leads to two ailments. Feline Dilated Cardiomyopathy, failure of the heart muscle, where the heart tissue swells to try to meet the animal’s circulatory needs and Central Retinal Degeneration, a condition in which lesions develop in the cat’s eyes leading to blindness and reproductive problems.

Thiamine Mononitrate

A form of thiamin or vitamin B1. The mononitrate form is typically more stable than the hydrochloride form. Thiamin is easily destroyed by high heat, so most dry foods and all canned foods should be supplemented with additional thiamin.

Tomatoes

Whole tomatoes are an excellent source of Vitamin C and especially rich in the carotenoid lycopene which is an important anti-oxidant.

Tomato Pomace

Tomato Pomace is the mixture of tomato skins, pulp and crushed seeds. It is an excellent source of soluble fiber and rich in the anti-oxidant lycopene. The Pomace contains concentrated Lycopene, considered one of today’s premier antioxidants. Tomato Pomace has an extra value in cat food. It helps naturally adjust pH levels to help reduce crystals, it naturally stimulates taste and it is an aid in reducing hairballs.

V

Vitamin A Acetate

Vitamin A is essential for healthy bones, teeth, hair, skin, eyes and mucous membranes. It is an oil soluble vitamin and is important to the immune system especially for respiratory infections. It is a building block of rhodopsin, a compound in the retina responsible for sight in partial darkness.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a coenzyme in nucleic acid, protein and lipid synthesis. It is necessary for growth, known to treat some types of nerve damage and pernicious anemia. It is essential for building red blood cells that carry oxygen to the cells of the body. Necessary for normal processing of carbohydrates, protein, and fat in the body.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and immune booster. Vitamin C has been known to help prevent bacterial, viral and degenerative diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, auto immune disease and cancer. Helps to keep teeth and bones strong.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D promotes healthy skin, bone, connective tissue and heart. It is necessary for the proper absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that helps to improve circulation and cardiac output.

Watercress

Is a green vegetable. Watercress is a great source of vitamins, C, B1, B6, K, E, Iron, Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc and Potassium.

Wheat Germ Meal

Wheat germ meal consists of wheat germ with some middling. It contains approximately 25% protein and is an excellent source of protein, essential fatty acids and B-vitamins.

Whole Ground Flaxseed

Ground flax seed contains flax seed oil, which is one of the richest sources of the essential Omega 3 fatty acids (linoletic acids). Flax is a good source of essential amino acids and contains all the essential vitamins and minerals required by dogs and cats. Flax is beneficial for its anti-inflammatory effect and has been known to help arthritis and prevent cancer. Flaxseed is also a great fiber source that aids in digestion. Also an excellent source of Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids that promote healthy skin and coat.

Yucca Schildigera Extract

Yucca Schidigera is a natural extract made entirely form the stem of the Yucca Schidigera Schidiger plant. Has been known to have anti-inflammatory effects on tendons and joint cartilage, helping with arthritis. Known to be beneficial for anemia, heart, skin, eyes and protect against cancer. Also beneficial in reducing stool and urine odor.

Z

Zinc Amino Acid Chelate

Zinc is an essential mineral important in maintaining healthy skin, hair, and mucous membranes. It has antioxidant properties maintains normal taste and sense of smell, aids in healing and promoting a healthy immune system, helps synthesize DNA and RNA and promotes normal growth and development. The chelated form of zinc is the most bioavailable form of zinc for your pet.
