Does your dog need to lose weight?

Because you see them everyday you may not have noticed the extra pounds that have been added on over time. Your Veterinarian will be able to tell you if your pup is overweight. Some obvious things you may notice are: loss of mobility or slow movement, their collar is tighter, or loss of stamina & energy. One way to determine if they are at a healthy weight is to place your hands on their sides, and if their ribs are hard or impossible to feel they are most likely overweight.

Being overweight matters

Maintaining a healthy weight and diet for your dog is essential as excess pounds can lead to serious health issues like arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Keeping your dog at a proper weight improves their quality of life, making playtime more enjoyable and reducing health risks. This not only enhances their daily experiences but also helps ensure a longer, happier life together.

Causes of weight gain in dogs

Besides the obvious factors of over feeding and lack of exercise, there are many other possible causes of weight gain. As dogs age, their calorie needs decrease. Also, the calorie needs of dogs after neutering and spaying will immediately decrease by as much as 25%. Some breeds of dogs are more likely to become overweight because of their metabolisms and predisposition. In addition, some medical issues can lead to weight gain. And the biggest reason, feeding table scraps or too many treats can also lead to weight gain.
