Is the term “Holistic” just a marketing buzzword when it comes to pet food? In short, it can be. Since there is no legal definition for “Holistic,” companies are free to use the term as they see fit. To truly understand what “holistic” means for a particular product, it’s important to look beyond the label and dig into the ingredients and the overall approach. For me, “holistic” reflects the philosophy that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

What I Look for in a Holistic Pet Food:

  • Only natural ingredients are used within the food’s recipe. This means no chemicals or artificial anything as well as no antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, or dyes.
  • The food uses whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. No processed parts or by-products of ingredients.
  • The ingredients chosen for the recipe are selected to benefit the animal. Ingredients are not used to make the food appear more appealing to the pet owner or to entice your pet to eat something that they normally wouldn’t.
  • The food contains enhanced vitamins and chelated/proteinated minerals.

We all know the benefits of eating a healthy diet, so make sure to read the label on anything you purchase and not just go for the best sounding name, prettiest bag, or the latest pet food trend!
