Real Answers. Real Food. Real Relief.

When your dog can’t stop itching, licking, or chewing, it’s hard to watch—and even harder not knowing why. Allergies are often at the root, and the right nutrition can make a real difference.

We work with pet parents to uncover potential triggers and create a personalized nutrition plan that supports skin health and long-term itch relief.  Most dogs experience noticeable improvement within 30–90 days.

Allergy to What?

Understanding What's Really Triggering the Itch

Common Symptoms

  • Constant scratching or licking

  • Red, inflamed skin

  • Recurring ear infections

  • Hot spots or hair loss

  • Digestive upset (loose stools)

Patterns That Matter

  • Year-round vs. seasonal flare-ups

  • Worse after meals vs. worse outdoors

  • Response to diet changes

Many dogs experience more than one trigger at the same time, which can make symptoms feel unpredictable and frustrating, without a clear plan.

Food Allergies & Sensitivities

When the problem is in the bowl

Food-related allergies and sensitivities usually develop over time and are often linked to repeated exposure to the same ingredients.

While allergies and sensitivities can look very similar, there is an important difference:

  • Food allergies involve an immune response to a specific protein (allergen). Reactions can range from mild to severe.

  • Food sensitivities are gradual reactions to ingredients without immune involvement and are typically less intense, but still uncomfortable.

Symptoms You May Notice

  • Itchy skin, paws, or ears

  • Chronic or recurring ear infections

  • Red or inflamed skin

  • Excessive licking or chewing

  • Digestive upset (loose stools, gas, vomiting)

  • Hot spots or hair loss

Typical Pattern

  • Symptoms are usually year-round, not seasonal

  • Flare-ups don’t align with weather or pollen changes

  • Discomfort may slowly worsen over time

  • Symptoms often improve once the diet is changed

Common Causes

  • Repeated exposure to common proteins like beef, chicken, or dairy

  • Fillers such as corn, wheat, or soy

  • Artificial additives or heavily processed ingredients

  • Poor fat balance in the diet, especially low omega-3s

The good news: food-related allergies and sensitivities are among the most manageable causes of chronic itching, when approached with the right nutrition plan.

Environmental Allergies

When the world outside Is the trigger

Environmental allergies are caused by things your dog comes into contact with every day—not what they eat. These allergens are often unavoidable, but how your dog’s body reacts to them can be influenced by overall health and nutrition.

Common triggers include pollen, dust mites, mold, grasses, and flea saliva. Some appear seasonally, while others—like dust mites and mold found in homes—can cause symptoms all year long.

Common Symptoms

  • Intense itching, especially paws and belly

  • Face rubbing

  • Red, irritated skin or rashes

  • Recurrent ear issues

  • Watery, itchy eyes

Typical Pattern

  • Often seasonal, with flare-ups during high pollen or grass seasons

  • Indoor allergens (dust mites, mold) may cause year-round symptoms

  • Symptoms may come and go depending on exposure

Common Causes

  • Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds

  • Mold and mildew

  • Dust mites

  • Flea saliva

While environmental allergies can’t be eliminated entirely, nutrition plays a major role in supporting the skin barrier and helping the body respond more comfortably to these triggers.

I LOVE The Pet Pantry. My dog has food allergies and I was previously paying a lot every month for prescription dog food. Several years ago I discovered The Pet Pantry and started my dog on the Natural Lamb and Rice Select. She has had no further issues and it is less than half the price I was paying for the prescription food. I love the reliable and friendly service, and my pups love the treats that come with each delivery! I’ve been in a pinch and needed food next day when delivery wasn’t scheduled for my area and they went out of the way to make it happen. Make the switch to The Pet Pantry, you won’t regret it!

We have used Pet Pantry for about 5 years now. We made the switch when one of my dogs was diagnosed with severe allergies and it was suggested that we try their allergy formula. It is the only food that has helped clear up her skin saving us literally a few thousand dollars in vet bills. Aside from PP food helping with allergies, the price is definitely reasonable for the quality and the fact that they deliver it to your front door AND bring a little extra bag of treats for our pups. We also have my sons dog for a few months at a time and since he loves their food as well I just send Elizabeth a quick email asking them to deliver an extra bag each month. It really couldn’t be more convenient, affordable or a better experience. We are customers for life.

I discovered The Pet Pantry earlier this year and decided to take a chance on their Holistic Choice dog food. Prior to this, we were experimenting with so many different foods (from prescription to homemade) for my Ridgebacks health issues. Thor has been very kind and helpful. I love the quality of the food, the surprise treats, and the communication with Thor and his staff that I still have Milo's food on repeat delivery even after moving to NJ!

Been a customer for over 12yrs now. Not one issue other than our pet became allergic to chicken. They went out of there way to replace what we had with a no chicken product at no cost. Very hard to find a company like this. They are the best, product and support.

Great business that really take the time to make you feel like a person and an important customer. I had ordered some food for my dogs that was on backorder, and when I reached out to them to find out when it would be available, they brought me out some food twice to hold me over until my complete order was available. They really cared enough about me as a customer and my dogs to make sure we were taken care of.

F.A.Q.'s

How do I know if my dog’s itching is caused by food or environmental allergies?
Many dogs show similar symptoms for both, which is why patterns matter. Food allergies tend to cause year-round itching, while environmental allergies often flare seasonally. Our nutrition plan helps identify likely triggers and guide next steps.
How long does it take to see improvement?
Most pet parents notice improvement in itching and skin comfort within 30–90 days when the plan is followed consistently. Every dog is different, but nutrition changes take time to support healing from the inside out.
Does this replace a visit to my veterinarian?
No. Our nutrition plans are designed to work alongside veterinary care, not replace it. We focus on diet and nutritional support to help manage symptoms and improve overall skin and immune health.
What makes food allergies easier to manage than environmental allergies?
Food allergies can often be addressed by removing problem ingredients and supporting the immune system through proper nutrition. Environmental allergies can’t always be avoided, but nutrition helps the body respond more calmly to triggers.
Will my dog need to eat a prescription food?
Not usually. Many dogs do well on limited-ingredient or novel-protein diets made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients. We focus on real food, balanced fats, and avoiding common triggers whenever possible.
What ingredients commonly cause food sensitivities in dogs?
Common triggers include chicken, beef, dairy, corn, wheat, soy, and artificial additives. Repeated exposure over time is often part of the issue.
Can omega-3s really help with itching and skin issues?
Yes. Omega-3 fatty acids help support the skin barrier and immune response, which can reduce inflammation and itching. Proper balance matters, not just adding more.
What if my dog has both food and environmental allergies?
That’s very common. Our approach looks at both diet and external triggers so we can reduce the overall allergic load and improve comfort, even when multiple factors are involved.
Are treats included in the nutrition plan?
Yes. Treats matter. We’ll help you choose safe, compatible treats so progress isn’t undone between meals.
What happens after I fill out the form?
We review your dog’s history, current diet, and symptoms, then create a personalized nutrition plan. You’ll receive guidance, recommendations, and information on samples or next steps—no pressure.
