Does your dog need to lose weight?

Has your furry friend gotten a bit… fluffier lately? It can be hard to notice gradual weight gain when you see your pup every day. But there are some simple ways to check:

The Simple Home Check-Up:

Learn more
Can you feel their ribs? (You should!)
Is their collar feeling snug?
Are they slowing down on walks?
Do they seem less playful?

Try This:

Gently place your hands on your dog’s sides. You should be able to feel their ribs with light pressure – like feeling your knuckles when your hand is flat on a table. If you can’t, your pup might be carrying extra weight.

5 stars! If only every business had service this good. Orders arrive at my door the next day. The staff is very friendly when I call. The quality of products I’ve ordered are excellent. I put my dog on the low fat for a while to get a few pounds off of her. When I switched to the regular food she actually preferred the taste of the low fat. I’m thinking of trying the cat food for my cat since my dog is not eat anything else. Highly recommend!

We absolutely love The Pet Pantry for our fur baby. Oakley always receives good reports from the vet regarding his weight and tests. So, we know he is getting the proper nourishment.

Lucky Paws

We've been using Pet Pantry for years as house food here at Lucky Paws. We needed a good, wholesome food for dogs who come without food, or run out of food from home during their stay. We've never had a dog get sick, even though we see many with sensitive tummies. It's also critical having it delivered. Always arrives quickly and saves us a lot of time and effort going out to pick up on our own. Comes in heavy duty bags good for storage as well. Very happy we found Pet Pantry when we did.

We have been using Pet Pantry for about 2.5years and have been extremely happy with them. We heard about Pet Pantry when we brought our dog to Sit Means Sit for training. The customer service is superb. It’s very easy to order online and depending on the time you order you can sometimes have same day delivery. I highly recommend Pet Pantry.

I have been a customer of The Pet Pantry for over 10 years. They are awesome to deal with. Any issues I have ever had have been addressed in less than a day, even on the weekends. Good prices and a great selection. I would highly recommend them and so would the puppy as she loves the food!

We have two older Dalmatians and have noticed a big difference in their energy levels since they have been on a “Pet Pantry” Diet. One of our Dalmatians is prone to skin allergies and seizures. “Pete” has had far fewer seizures and his skin and coat look remarkably better. We love the convenience and Thor has “scored, big time” in our eyes with his attention to service detail. Pete and Bailey love the monthly treats and were grateful for the special toys around the Holidays from the Pet Pantry. What a great service!

Our terrier has now been on Pet Pantry food for 11 years! We recently needed guidance on the most appropriate choice for her as a senior dog. Pet Pantry was very helpful and generous in taking time to learn about her particular needs and providing samples before switching to something for her senior needs. It is a pleasure to work with a local company that consistently provides excellent service!

F.A.Q.'s

Are The Pet Pantry’s foods safe and tested?
Yes! Every batch is slow-cooked in small quantities to preserve nutrients and is rigorously tested for safety and nutrition. We’re proud of our spotless recall record
Do Holistic Choice recipes support long-term health better than mainstream foods?
Yes! Our small-batch, slow-cooked recipes lock in vital nutrients that support immune health, digestion, joint care, and long-term vitality. Unlike many mainstream foods that cut corners for cost efficiency, Holistic Choice ensures your pet gets the full benefits of real, nutrient-rich nutrition.
Do you offer grain-free and grain-inclusive options in your shop?
Absolutely. Whether your pet thrives on a grain-free diet or prefers wholesome grains like brown rice, our Holistic Choice recipes and partner brands cover both options, making it simple to shop based on your pet’s needs.
Does Holistic Choice have a better recall record than national brands?
Yes! Holistic Choice has a spotless recall record—something we’re very proud of. Every batch is carefully tested before it reaches your door to guarantee safety and nutrition. Unlike big brands like Purina or Iams, which have faced multiple recalls, Holistic Choice gives you peace of mind and consistent, reliable quality in every bowl.
Does The Pet Pantry offer a guarantee for the Holistic Choice food?
We stand by our 100% satisfaction guarantee—if you’re not happy, we’ll make it right or refund your purchase. No hassles, no small print.
Does The Pet Pantry offer free delivery?
Yes! We provide free home delivery in the greater Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area (Triangle) and Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Lexington, Asheboro area (Triad), with flat-rate shipping in parts of North Carolina and affordable nationwide delivery by UPS. How do I know if the food I’ve chosen is working well for my dog/cat?
Your pet will show you through their overall health and happiness! Signs that a food is a good fit include: Healthy skin & shiny coat – soft fur with less shedding or dandruff. Good digestion – regular, firm stools without excessive gas or tummy upset. Steady energy & vitality – active, playful, and maintaining a healthy weight. Bright eyes & strong immune health – fewer illnesses and quicker recovery. If you notice persistent issues like itching, frequent stomach upset, dull coat, or lack of energy, it may be time to adjust their diet.
How do I know which dog food is right for my pet?
Our team is happy to help! We provide personalized recommendations based on your dog’s age, breed, activity level, and health needs. You can always contact us for one-on-one guidance.
How do pets respond to Holistic Choice compared to foods like Purina or Iams?
Pets on Holistic Choice often enjoy better digestion, shinier coats, healthier teeth and gums, and more energy. Many pet parents come to us after dealing with allergies, skin troubles, or picky eating from mass-market foods—and they quickly see the difference. A happier, healthier pet is what Holistic Choice is all about!
How long will it take for my dog to reach a healthy weight?
Every dog is different, but with the right food and activity, many see improvements in energy, mobility, and weight within the first month. Slow and steady weight loss is the healthiest path, helping your dog keep the pounds off long-term.
How much should I feed my overweight dog?
The Lighten Up Dog program is The Pet Pantry’s weight management initiative that helps pet parents choose the right nutrition, portion sizes, and feeding routines for overweight or less active dogs.
Is Holistic Choice available for puppies, seniors, or pets with special needs?
Yes. Holistic Choice offers tailored solutions for puppies, seniors, weight management, skin & coat health, and pets with allergies, ensuring the right nutrition at every life stage.
Should I add vitamins or other supplements on top of their daily food?
For normally healthy pets a supplement/vitamin is not necessary when feeding Holistic Choice foods. If your pet has a specific health issue that needs to be addressed, supplements/vitamins may be a good option to consider. Always consult with your pet's veterinarian for more information on supplements and vitamins.
What health risks are linked to an overweight dog?
Excess weight increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, joint problems, and reduced lifespan. Helping your dog reach a healthy weight can significantly improve their quality of life and longevity.
What human foods are safe to add to my dog’s food?
Some fresh, whole foods can be a healthy addition to your dog’s diet in moderation. Safe options include: Lean proteins like plain cooked chicken, turkey, or salmon (no seasoning, bones, or skin). Vegetables such as carrots, green beans, pumpkin, or broccoli. Fruits like blueberries, apple slices (without seeds), or bananas. Plain grains like rice or oatmeal (cooked and unseasoned). Healthy extras such as a spoonful of plain pumpkin purée or plain yogurt (no added sugar or artificial sweeteners).
What human foods should I not feed to my dog?
Some foods and additives that are safe for humans can be harmful—or even dangerous—for dogs. Ingredients to avoid include:Chocolate & caffeine – can be toxic to the nervous system and heart. Grapes & raisins – may cause kidney failure. Onions, garlic, chives – damage red blood cells and can cause anemia. Xylitol (artificial sweetener) – found in sugar-free gum, peanut butter, and baked goods; can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar. Alcohol & raw yeast dough – harmful to the liver and digestive system. High-fat or heavily seasoned foods – can upset digestion and may trigger pancreatitis. By-products, artificial colors, and preservatives – offer no nutritional value and may be harsh on sensitive systems. If you feel unsure about a particular food, it is recommended to err on the side of caution and not give the food to your pet.
What if my pet doesn’t like the food?
We stand behind every recipe. If for any reason you or your pet aren’t completely happy, we’ll refund your purchase. No hassles, no worries—just our promise to keep you and your pet satisfied.
What makes Holistic Choice dog food different?
Holistic Choice is made with human-grade proteins, wholesome grains, and natural vitamins and minerals, slow-cooked in small batches to preserve nutrients. Unlike many big brands, it contains no by-products, corn, wheat, soy, fillers, or artificial additives
Why should I try free samples before buying a full bag?
Every pet is unique. Sampling helps you test flavor preferences, check for sensitivities, and ensure your pet loves the food—saving you money and preventing wasted bags of food.
Will my dog still enjoy the taste of weight management food?
Yes! Holistic Choice formulas are crafted with ingredients dogs love. Many customers find their dogs eagerly switch from calorie-heavy kibble to our Light recipes without hesitation.
Will my pet gain weight after being spayed or neutered?
Spaying and neutering may slightly change metabolism, but pets only gain weight if they consume more calories than they burn. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, your pet can stay fit and healthy after surgery.
Will my picky eater actually eat it?
Absolutely. We hear it all the time—bowls licked clean! With multiple flavors and proteins to choose from, even the pickiest eaters usually find their favorite. We offer very generous free samples and we’ll work with you to find a recipe they love.

🐶 Here are some ways to check if your dog is overweight:

1. The Rib Rule

Just right:

Feels like running your fingers over a keyboard

Too much:

Feels like pressing on a cushion

Pro tip

Use gentle pressure – like petting, not pressing!

2.  The Hourglass Test

Just right:

Clear curve in from ribs to waist

Too much:

Straight or bulging sides

Pro tip

Look from above while your pup is standing

3. The Profile View

Just right:

Tummy tucks up behind ribs

Too much:

Straight or sagging belly line

Pro tip

Check while your dog is standing naturally

4. The Energy Check

Watch for these changes:

Extra panting on regular walks
Choosing naps over play
Slower during usual activities
Less excited about exercise
 5. Physical Changes

Keep an eye out for:

Rounder, fuller face
No visible waistline
Padding between back legs
Difficulty jumping into car

💡Remember: This is About Health, Not Shame

Every dog is different, and small changes can make a big difference!

Causes of weight gain in dogs

There are many reasons why a dog might gain weight, and you should check with your Vet if you suspect any of these causes:
Health Issues
Cushing’s disease, hypothyroidism, intestinal parasites, or other health issues.
Medication
Prescription medication may contribute to weight gain.
Other Factors
Fluid retention, hormone problems, pregnancy, or stress can also lead to weight gain in dogs.

Remember: This is About Health, Not Shame

Every dog is different, and small changes can make a big difference!

Why it is important to keep your dog at a healthy weight? Excess weight can lead to the following:

Arthritis
Weight puts pressure on joints, causing them to wear down faster. Arthritis can also make dogs less likely to exercise, which can lead to a cycle of more eating, sleeping, and laying around.
Respiratory Problems
Excess fat in the chest can prevent the lungs from fully expanding, while fat in the abdomen can push up against the diaphragm. This makes it harder for the lungs to supply oxygen, especially when exercising.
Skin Conditions
Excess fat on your dog’s body can be a sign of being overweight. You can check for fat sacks between their legs or inspect their hips while petting them.
Heart Disease
Increased body fat can lead to higher blood pressure, which can cause congestive heart failure. The heart also has to work harder to pump blood to excess tissues.
Diabetes
Obesity increases insulin resistance in dogs, which can lead to diabetes. Diabetes is a serious health risk that requires ongoing treatment.
Cancer
Studies suggest that obese dogs may have an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer, including urinary bladder cancer and mammary tumors.
Liver Disease
Long-term obesity can lead to a fatty liver, which is a main cause of liver disease in dogs.
Overall Wellbeing
Simply put, your dog will feel better and be happier at a healthy weight. They are much less likely to suffer a premature death.

Let’s help your dog feel their best!

We do not want to starve them, feed them bland/boring food, or drain your wallet with a prescription diet. Let us show you how you can feed a healthy, all-natural diet that will make them happy.
