The Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been helping animals in our community since 1970, and has managed the Durham County Animal Shelter since 1990. APS relies on donations from caring individuals and corporations to feed, shelter and provide medical attention for the nearly 4,000 stray, surrendered, abandoned, abused and neglected animals we care for each year.

Our Mission: to strengthen bonds between people and animals in Durham County through community engagement and compassionate care for animals in need.

Our Vision: There are no displaced or unwanted pets; all animals and people are treated with compassion and respect; and community services are available to all.

BFPA is a no-kill animal rescue organization with no building, office or shelter. They are an all-foster network committed to helping cats and dogs in need. Individual donations are very important source of income as they receive no public funding. Their purpose is to provide medical assistance, foster homes and adoption services to lost, abandoned, abused or neglected animals in Wake County, NC and surrounding counties.

Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of golden retrievers, golden mixes, and golden-hearted dogs in need. This organization advocates for responsible pet ownership, community education, and protection of all dogs. NRGRR is also dedicated to finding permanent homes for golden retrievers in need and is managed and run by volunteers whose efforts are dedicated to preserving the breed.

As of 2025, NRGRR has saved and enriched the lives of more than 5,200 dogs and their forever families. There territory includes the eastern half of North Carolina from the Triangle area and north to Virginia, south to South Carolina, and east to the Atlantic coast. They accept any golden retriever into their program regardless of age or medical condition. They help families who can no longer care for their goldens and also partner with shelters to save strays and assure that goldens are able to find their forever homes.

Pawfect Match is not a shelter with a physical location, but rather is a network of volunteers and foster homes — all of our dogs stay with a foster home. We believe that ALL dogs deserve a second chance regardless of their breed or age. We take a different approach to rescue. We don’t try to save the masses; we just save ONE at a time and make them the best dog they can be by the time they find their forever homes. Besides the basics of crate training and house training, we teach them basic obedience, we groom them, feed them a high quality dog food, and last but not least, we shower them with LOVE and attention that hopefully teaches them to trust again and realize that life really IS good.
